Who Is Sydney Sweeney?
Sydney Sweeney is an American actress and producer best known for playing Cassie Howard on HBO’s Euphoria and Olivia Mossbacher in the first season of The White Lotus. She’s also a proven movie lead, thanks to Anyone But You and The Housemaid. Off screen, she runs the production company Fifty-Fifty Films and the lingerie brand SYRN.
Her rise wasn’t overnight. She spent close to a decade picking up guest spots and small parts before Euphoria changed everything in 2019. Now she’s one of the few actors under 30 who can open a film, produce it, and build a business alongside it.
How Old Is Sydney Sweeney?
Sydney Sweeney is 29 years old. She was born on September 12, 1997, so she turned 29 just a few weeks ago.
Fans often guess she’s younger, and there’s a reason. She was 21 when Euphoria premiered in 2019, and she kept playing high school students well into her twenties.
How Tall Is Sydney Sweeney?
Most biographies list Sydney Sweeney’s height at 5 feet 3 inches (about 160 cm), and a few round it up to 5 feet 4 inches. She hasn’t posted an official measurement, so treat these numbers as reported figures.
Her weight isn’t publicly disclosed. She has spoken in interviews about how much attention her body gets, and she has pushed back on the constant commentary. She trained hard for the boxing role in Christy, and she grew up playing several sports.
Where Did Sydney Sweeney Grow Up? Early Life and Education
Sweeney was born in Spokane, Washington, and grew up in the Spokane area as the oldest child in her family. Her parents encouraged her to try everything. She played soccer, skied, golfed, studied mixed martial arts, and took ballet.
Acting came early. Around age 11, she landed a part in the low-budget horror film ZMD: Zombies of Mass Destruction (2009), which was shot near her hometown. Her younger brother, Trent, appeared in it too. She has said that at 12 she put together a plan, almost like a business pitch, to convince her parents to move to Los Angeles. It worked, and the family relocated so she could chase acting full time.
As for school, she attended Saint George’s School in Spokane for part of her education. Public details about her later schooling are thin, so it’s best not to guess.
Sydney Sweeney’s Parents and Family
Sweeney’s family story is a big part of her public image. She often credits her parents for backing a dream that had no obvious Hollywood connection.
Who Are Sydney Sweeney’s Parents?
Her mother, Lisa Sweeney (born Lisa Mudd), worked as a lawyer before stepping back from her career to raise her kids. Her father, Steven Sweeney, has been described in different reports as working in hospitality and health care. Britannica calls him a health-care professional.
Her parents’ marriage ended, and Sweeney has talked about money being tight during her childhood. Even so, she has said she stays close to both of them. Neither parent works in entertainment.
Does Sydney Sweeney Have Siblings?
Yes. She has a younger brother named Trent Sweeney. He appeared alongside her in ZMD: Zombies of Mass Destruction as a kid, and he has stayed mostly out of the spotlight since.
How Did Sydney Sweeney Become Famous? Career Timeline
Sweeney’s career has three clear phases: the grind, the breakthrough, and the box office years. Here’s how each one played out.
The Early Years (2009 to 2018)
After her first small role in 2009, Sweeney took on guest parts on TV, including Grey’s Anatomy and Criminal Minds. Her first regular-series work came with the Netflix comedy Everything Sucks! in 2018.
That same year, she added two prestige credits. She played Eden Spencer on The Handmaid’s Tale and Alice on HBO’s Sharp Objects. In 2019, she also had a small part in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Euphoria: The Role That Made Her a Star
Euphoria premiered in June 2019, and Cassie Howard became Sweeney’s signature role. Cassie is emotional, messy, and impossible to look away from. Season 2 arrived in January 2022 and pushed Cassie into even darker territory.
In 2022, Sweeney earned two Emmy nominations in a single year, one for Euphoria and one for The White Lotus. The third and final season aired from April 12 to May 31, 2026. In the finale, “In God We Trust,” Cassie ends up alone in a mansion with mounting debt after her husband Nate’s death. Sweeney has said she broke down when she first read that ending.
The White Lotus
In 2021, Sweeney played Olivia Mossbacher, a sharp-tongued college student on a Hawaii family vacation, in the first season of The White Lotus. The role showed she could hold her own in an ensemble of veteran actors. It also proved she wasn’t a one-show star.
From TV Star to Movie Lead
Her movie career took off in 2023. She played the whistleblower Reality Winner in the HBO film Reality, then starred in the romantic comedy Anyone But You with Glen Powell in December 2023. It earned about $88 million in the United States alone, a rare win for a rom-com in the streaming era.
Then came the uneven stretch. Madame Web (February 2024) struggled with critics, while the horror film Immaculate (March 2024), which she also produced, found a solid audience. In 2025, she starred in five films: Echo Valley, Americana, Eden, Christy, and The Housemaid.
Christy is worth a closer look. Sweeney played real-life boxer Christy Martin and earned strong praise for the physical transformation. The film grossed only about $2 million against a reported $15 million budget, but it hit the No. 1 spot on HBO Max in April 2026 and audiences rated it highly. Eden, directed by Ron Howard, also struggled in theaters.
The Housemaid: Her Biggest Hit Yet
The Housemaid opened on December 19, 2025. Sweeney starred in and executive produced the psychological thriller, which co-starred Amanda Seyfried and was directed by Paul Feig. It became her highest-grossing U.S. release, with more than $126 million domestically. Lionsgate projected a worldwide total near $383 million, and a sequel was quickly approved.
